The world wide expanding electrification of everything that moves will be greatly accelerated by improving batteries. In addition, higher torque and power densities are required of the prime movers powered by advanced renewable power sources. The available mechanical/magnetic materials available for designing and manufacturing electric motors and generators determine the ultimate torque and power densities possible.
The mechanical and magnetic material limitations will be summarized and how the torque per unit mass of electric machines. Several design strategies will be detailed
indicating how the torque density can be maximized using existing materials, including advanced cooling, and how to exceed air gap flux densities of one Tesla.
