The radial flux permanent magnet traction motor under consideration is used for motorsport and has a maximum speed of 12,000 RPM. It has three different cooling systems: housing cooling jacket, direct slot cooling and liquid-cooled rotor. The thermal behavior of the machine is studied considering a real race drive cycle like the Le Mans circuit. The machine losses, during the race, are calculated with electromagnetic simulations, whose results are then used for the thermal study of the machine behavior, with the aim of optimizing its cooling systems. Special attention is given to the high frequency losses occurring in the winding.
